Photographing fireworks can be somewhat of a challenge, but if you prepare for the event with these tips – you could end up with some rewarding images. You’ll need a tripod, extra batteries, extra memory cards, and patience.

A tripod is definately required for you to keep your camera steady. One with adjustable legs will help on uneven ground. A remote release, if one is available for your camera, will help keep the camera motionless.

Be sure to get there early so you can frame out your shots. Set up your tripod and take a few test shots to find the angle you prefer. Take note of your horizon line, foreground and background presence.

Since the light from the fireworks is very bright, you’ll want to set your aperature between f/8 and f/16. Set your ISO to around 100 for best results. As far as shutter speed goes, this is where the manual release will help you. Set your camera to B-bulb mode. Set your focus on infinity. Open the shutter once the firework launches and keep it open for a second or two.

Have a great time and be sure to let me know how your fireworks adventure goes!
